SA Speedcars is proud to announce that Stephen Dillon, long-time supporter, car owner, and Life Member of the club, has been named Grand Marshall of the 83rd Australian Speedcar Championship.
While drivers often capture the spotlight, it's the passion and dedication of those behind the scenes—owners, crew members, committee members, and lifelong supporters—that shape the heart of our sport. Few embody that spirit more than Stephen Dillon.
Stephen’s journey with Speedcars began in 1979 when the iconic McIntosh Offenhauser became available for sale and was snapped up by Stephen and Gary Dillon—without informing “Pa Dillon.” With the purchase made, Gary, a former solo rider, took the wheel. It was a decision that sparked decades of family commitment and excellence in the sport, spanning Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
In 2006, Stephen further cemented his dedication to the division with the purchase of a pristine Breka/Ed Pink machine from the Seamount stable in New Zealand—at a time when South Australia had no other Speedcars in competition. His vision and investment reignited local interest and enabled his son Ben, along with nephews Luke and Lee, to hit the track, ultimately adding another three South Australian titles to Gary's two.
From supporting the Speedcar Super Series to backing blue ribbon events across the country, Stephen’s impact has been widespread and enduring. When his son and nephew's stepped away from Speedcars, he placed his trust in emerging talent—NSW’s Michael Stewart—ensuring that the next generation of racers could carry the flame forward.
In 2018, SA Speedcars honoured Stephen with Life Membership, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to Speedcars in South Australia.
“It’s an honour to name Stephen as our Grand Marshall,” said SA Speedcars President, Alison Dwyer. “This sport doesn’t exist without people like Stephen—people who invest not just money, but heart and soul. Stephen's passion, vision, and tireless work behind the scenes have left a legacy in our club that will be felt for years to come.”
The 83rd running of the Australian Speedcar Championship will be contested this weekend, April 11-12th 2025 at Murray Bridge Speedway, thanks to The Speedway Shop and Speedcars Australia.
